This image is from my favorite scene when Piero and Vittoria embrace each other tightly, both facing the camera after fooling around in his office and promising that they will see each other every day. They seemed to finally have found a comfortable place within each other. Yet the expression they share while they embrace each other allows us to look into their mind – they seem so alone. They struggle from solitude and loneliness even in embrace and love. They look terrified. As painful it is, the scene speaks to the truth about the nature of relationship.
